Philosophy of Science

During the last twenty years of his life, Jose Porfirio Miranda dedicated his time to deepening and maturing his knowledge of philosophy.  The defining thread in his philosophical research, the concept of justice, is found in his book, Marx and the Bible subtitled A Critique of the Philosophy of Oppression. On page 978 of his diary dated 14th September 1981, he writes:

“The beginning of philosophizing is experiencing injustice. If philosophy does not mean to abolish injustice, it has no reason for existing.   This is the true answer to the problem that Hegel and Schelling put forth as to whether there is an absolute beginning in philosophy.”

While teaching (Philosophy of Law) at UNAM (1973) he wrote class notes that became his NOTEBOOKS ON LAW; copies of which are given separately.

Later teaching at UAM Iztapalapa (1974), his interest in showing the scientific side of morality increased and produces his manuscripts on the Philosophy of Science in his 17 NOTEBOOKS ON SCIENCE and culminated in his fundamental book  ‘I Appeal to Reason.’ This book was published in 1983. His first note in his diary on 29th August 1984 is as follows:

“Now I remember that the generating idea for my book “I Appeal to Reason “, a book that had been incubating for more than 25 years, is the one I put in Number 79, third paragraph, ….. There is something atrocious about the universities imposing intellectual dishonesty by not acknowledging, as if it were non-existent, a fact that we all know exists: the function of understanding.  They hold to our inner function of understanding so that we comprehend what they are telling us; and what they are telling us is that such a function does not exist! By this behavior there is a breakdown of dialogue and under these same conditions a possibility of dialogue; exactly the same as when a swindler, appealing to the goodness of your heart, leads you to a place supposedly to help a person in extreme necessity, and once there threatens you with a gun apologizing sarcastically by saying that this world is a jungle and a fight with everybody against everybody and that you should trust no-one.”

Immediately underneath he wrote:

“When I found in Hume and Kant that empiric sciences are not really empiric, and that those who put morality and science on opposing sides are wrong, my book now had a plot.”

RORAC  Foundation’s objective, through the Jose Porfirio Miranda Centre for Philosophic Studies, is to make Jose Porfirio Miranda’s work known and to back research by contemporary philosophers. The decision to scan the manuscripts was based on the idea that the spirit of Jose Porfirio Miranda’s research was to transmit exactly copies of the texts of his collection in a universal format.
